UX writing, copywriting and absolutely no prescriptions

Who am I not?

I’d probably better start with who I’m not… if you’ve come here with an ailment (of any description) to find Dr Hilary Jones in the hope of a cure, or pills, or even a diagnosis, then you’re probably in the wrong place. Sorry, I’m not the good doctor you’re looking for.

Who am I?

I am not-the-doctor Hilary Jones, and you can find out more about the interesting stuff, like past jobs and all things educational-qualification-related over on Linked In.

In case you like this site so much that you don’t want to leave yet, I’ve got an MA in English from Cardiff University and a BA in English from Exeter, both of which left me woefully under-prepared for any of my future jobs, but were undoubtedly still the right choice (as I mainly wanted to write about children’s books and read some of Sir Walter Scott’s original manuscripts during my time at uni).

You can also have a nosey at some books that I co-wrote rather a long time ago, if that’s the sort of thing that takes your fancy.

What do I do?

Right now, I’m working as a UX writer for a a well-known bank, and I’m also a freelancer for some very lovely clients indeed, in various places in the UK and across various sectors.

One of those is the National Trust, where I write descriptions for new holiday cottages, campsites and every other type of holiday accommodation you can think of..

What else?

After a year of renovations (which felt a lot longer) I also own, run and manage the very lovely Pontganol Cottage. You can find out more about her on her website, but she’s a 4 star self-catering cottage in Llangynidr in the Brecon Beacons National Park, close to Crickhowell and Brecon.

What did I do?

Background
My background is in publishing, digital operations, arts, heritage, a little bit of advertising research, careers, education and museums. Probably not in that exact order. Oh, and I was a trainee tax inspector once, for nearly four months, but please don’t hold that against me.

Clients
I’ve worked with big organisations, and for big organisations, as well as little ones and medium ones. I’ve commissioned content from historians, game designers, evaluators, teachers, academics and TV presenters. I’ve edited and produced magazines like the lovely Heritage Learning (for English Heritage) and books (see my Amazon author page).

Other skills
I’ve written research proposals and carried out actual research including questionnaire design and production, and video vox pops. (In Slough. Yes. It was interesting.)  I’ve written birthday party invitations and tweets about rare roast beef for restaurants and couriers failing to deliver anything to my house.

Anything involving words is right up my street, (as long as it’s not words being delivered by the aforementioned couriers, in which case, it’s not even my street, it’s the next one over. Grrr.).

Cheese dreams

In case that’s not enough for you stalky types, I am also irrationally fond of cheese (not blue cheese though, that’s a bad use of an otherwise delicious foodstuff), cats, em dashes (I’ve really been holding back in this bio), brackets (not holding back so much on them, it would seem), architecture, good food and creating ridiculous amounts of work for myself renovating old houses.

Word dreams

If you’ve got any work at all that involves eating cheese (or indeed pretty much eating anything), in the company of cats, somewhere beautiful that doesn’t involve painting sash windows, then I’m your woman. And thank you in advance.

What I can do for you

My first love is writing, so if you’ve got any at all that you’d like me to do, whether its blog posts, website copy, editorial or tweets, then please get in touch. I do UX-stuff, web stuff, word-stuff, social media stuff, and cakes (on request).

Just to clarify, I don’t do prescriptions, I’m not Dr Hilary Jones.
